The History of the Quartermass-Wilde
House
Louis J. Wilde was elected Mayor of San Diego in
1917 after a spirited campaign in which "More SmokeStacks" was
his slogan. He was mayor when President Wilson visited San Diego in September
1919 and officiated
in the City Stadium at the appearance of the Prince of Wales in April 1920.
While mayor, Wilde owned the magnificent property at Twenty-fourth and
Broadway-- the beautiful Quartermass-Wilde
Victorian.
In this connection,
it is recalled that Wilde was instrumental in giving Broadway its name,
known as D Street until he insisted on a change in 1912, for which he
became known as "the man who made Broadway. (Adapted from: The
San Diego Union, 4-19-1926, 1:8. )
Today, the prestigious Quartermass—Wilde
House is home to top attorneys in San Diego.
